HARLINGEN – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine welcomed its second cohort of medical residents June 23 and 24, during orientation at the Harlingen Academic Clinical Research Building.

This year, UTRGV welcomed 42 new medical residents who will spend the next three to five years training in four different disciplines at three hospitals throughout the Valley: Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, McAllen Medical Center and Valley Baptist Medical Center.

With this new cohort, UTRGV is sponsoring 100 medical residents:

– 30 at Valley Baptist Medical Center’s Internal Medicine program

– 18 at McAllen Medical Center’s Family Medical Center program

– And 52 at Doctor’s Hospital at Renaissance residency programs – 24 in Internal Medicine, 12 in Family Medicine, and eight each at DHR’s general surgery and obstetrics and gynecology programs.

Dr. Yolanda Gomez, UTRGV School of Medicine’s associate dean for Graduate Medical Education, said the 42 residents were selected from some 8,000 applicants.
