SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – Officials on the Island say tourists have nothing to worry about in regards to reports of high levels of bacteria discovered in Gulf Coast beaches.
“The bacteria Vibrio vulnificus has recently caused health scares in two Texas coastal towns, Galveston and Port Aransas. The City of South Padre Island regularly checks the Texas Beach Watch website for bacteria levels in both the Gulf of Mexico and Laguna Madre,” said City of South Padre Island Shoreline Management Director Patrick Barrineau.
“Since the beginning of this summer season, there haven’t been any high or
unusual readings. There is no reason to believe the events further up the coast would
repeat themselves here, so we look forward to seeing you this summer!”
The Island is encouraging swimmers to check surf conditions by using the flag system, which indicates daily conditions on the beach.
