HARLINGEN — Day or night, rain or shine, run or walk, the Harlingen Hometown Heroes Trail at Pendleton Park is ready for foot traffic.

The official dedication of the new $400,000, one-mile trail today at the park drew city officials, veterans and supporters of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

The Heroes trail is the only one in the city which is lighted at night, which allows park users to exercise out of the heat of the South Texas sun.

The trail itself is 10 feet wide and is made of decomposed crushed granite, which city officials say is easier on the knees and ankles. The trail is designed to be used by walkers, joggers, cyclists and those in wheelchairs, all at the same time.

Funding for the trail was provided by the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation.

The Harlingen Hometown Heroes Trail honors veterans, first responders and citizens who have been instrumental in making the community a better place to live.
