Commission increases monthly water and garbage rates

LYFORD — Residents are bracing for the pinch.

City commissioners have increased average monthly water and garbage rates to keep up with costs.

Within city limits, monthly residential water rates will climb from a $17 minimum to a $23 minimum for up to 2,000 gallons.

Outside the city, those rates will jump from a $26 minimum to $32 for up to 2,000 gallons.

Commissioners voted to boost water rates after the Delta Lake irrigation district increased its rates in January.

The new rates replace a schedule set in June 2011.

Garbage rates also are jumping.

Inside city limits, commissioners raised garbage rates from $16.50 for a 96-gallon cart to $21.59.

Outside the city, rates will climb from $20 for a 96-gallon cart to $26.74.

Commissioners voted to raise garbage rates after Allied Waste announced plans to increase its rates in September.

The new rates replace a schedule approved in October 2011.
