LA FERIA — Helen Muse has made history.
She is the first woman in District 2-A3 to be inducted into the Texas Lions Hall of Fame.
“It was a surprise,” the former longtime local teacher said during a phone interview Friday. “I was not expecting it, let alone to even be nominated. It is quite an honor.”
The district covers the Rio Grande Valley and up to the Rockport area to the north and Zapata to the west. There are about 60 Lions Clubs in the district.
But, for Muse, service to the community and involvement with the Lions club trumps any awards, even if this is a big one.
“This is one way to live my faith and help others in the community,” she said about being part of the Lions Club family. “It makes me feel like I am earning every day here on Earth.”
Her recent award, which was presented in Midland earlier this month, also is quite appropriate.
However, she is quick to point out it’s not about her. Muse, who has been a resident of the Valley since the late 1960s, would rather focus any discussions on the successes and programs of her Lions Club and Lions Club International.
Muse is a long-time and well-known state leader for Lions Club International.
