HARLINGEN — Five more special Harlingen residents will be walking the Harlingen Walk of Fame.
The Rotary Club of Harlingen’s annual induction ceremony yesterday at the Marine Military Academy honored those citizens for their impact on the community, their life experiences and for their significant civic contributions.
This year’s inductees were Glen “Doc“ Cleckler, Ruth Ewers, Gerald Gathright, Alejandro Hinojosa Sr. and Kathy Preddy.
Cleckler, a Marine who fought at Iwo Jima, was a long-time teacher, assistant principal and principal with the Harlingen Consolidated School District.
Ewers is an ever-present volunteer on numerous Harlingen boards, including Loaves and Fishes, Keep Harlingen Beautiful and Monica and Maggie’s House.
Gathright is well-known for his work with the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Harlingen, a role he has had with the club for 39 years.
Hinojosa was the first Mexican-American to own a retail electric utility, Hino electric Power Co. He also serves as secretary of the Port of Harlingen board.
Preddy’s current position is as resource director for United Way, but she also is a 30-year board member of the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Harlingen and serves on the board of Habitat for Humanity. She is president of Leadership Harlingen and the Junior League of Harlingen.
“What we’re trying to do is recognize the people of Harlingen, anywhere from housewives up to doctors and astronauts, anybody who’s done anything to benefit the community of Harlingen,“ said Rotary President Chris Barnetsky.
The addition of the five community leaders yesterday brings the total number of inductees into the Harlingen Walk of Fame to 129. The Harlingen Walk of Fame was unveiled in 2010 as part of the Harlingen Centennial Celebration
