‘Super Hero’ Walk/Run this Saturday morning: Will benefit Rio Grande Valley students at TSTC

HARLINGEN – Rio Grande Valley residents and families are invited to walk or run for their health while receiving free medical screenings – as well as a chance to win major prizes — during the Third Annual Harlingen Medical Center and Texas State Technical College Community Health Walk/Run 5k/1M this Saturday morning (June 25, 2016) from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on the TSTC Campus, located at 1902 N. Loop 499 in Harlingen.

The benefit “Super Hero” walk / run will help raise funds for scholarships for Rio Grande Valley students attending TSTC, while providing a morning of healthy activities for families, including free blood pressure, blood sugar, and vision screenings, as well as health and wellness education; healthy snacks; and games for children — including a kiddie obstacle course and a giant “jenga” game.

The walk / run will also include an optional “Super Heroes” costume contest. Children and adults are encouraged to dress as their favorite comic book super hero – such as Superman, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, or Batgirl. First, second, and third prizes – to include major items like an iPad — will be awarded for best costume in a children’s age group and an adult age group (from among those who walk or run at the event).

“If you are looking for a fun way to improve your health, reduce body fat, and boost your muscle power and stamina, then walking is considered an ideal exercise by many health experts,” said Brenda Ivory, President and Chief Executive Officer at Harlingen Medical Center.

“The HMC and TSTC Community Health Walk/Run is designed to promote physical activity for good health in our community, support local students looking to pursue a higher level of education, all while having good, family time together,” she added.

he event will begin with on-site registration at 7 a.m. Saturday, followed by a Zumba warm-up session at 7:45 a.m., the five-kilometer walk and one-mile run at 8 a.m., and recognition awards and closing ceremonies at 9 a.m. The recognition awards will include trophies and gift baskets for the top three runners of the 5K.

The donation fee to participate in the benefit event is $30 for adults and $20 for children under 17. The cost is $10 for TSTC students and for TSTC and HMC employees. All proceeds will benefit the Harlingen Medical Center Endowed Scholarship Fund at TSTC.

All participants will receive a T-shirt, a participation medal, and the chance to win door prizes.
