Running for a Cause: Free health and wellness event aims to provide scholarships for students

Walk your way across the finish line for a good cause next Saturday at TSTC.

Harlingen Medical Center and Texas State Technical College are partnering once again for the 3rd Annual Harlingen Medical Center Walk/Run on June 25. The purpose of this event is to raise money for the Harlingen Medical Center Endowed Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to deserving students.

Manny Chacon, regional director of Business Development and Marketing for Harlingen Medical Center explained the significance of this collaboration with TSTC.

“Harlingen Medical Center chose to partner with Texas State Technical College-Harlingen because we, as a health care organization, want to help nurture the future of health care,” Chacon said. “We want to ensure that we are helping introduce new health care professionals into the health industry. TSTC has a number of excellent academic health care programs that are helping prepare students to enter the world of health care with both a stable academic background, and with clinical experience.”

TSTC Provost Stella Garcia is encouraging faculty and staff to join students at this annual event.

“We’re honored that Harlingen Medical Center has chosen to partner with us on this event.

They could have chosen any other organization, but they chose us, and for that, we are thankful,” said Garcia. “We want to do our part to make sure we raise more funds than last year for this year’s event to give to our deserving students.”

Not only will this event focus on raising money for scholarships, but complimentary blood pressure, blood sugar and vision screenings will also be provided to the community.

“The significance of the event for the Harlingen Community is that Harlingen Medical Center is not only helping to raise monies for student scholarships, but also raising health and wellness awareness,” said Chacon. “These efforts are part of Harlingen Medical Center’s commitment to partner with local agencies, such as TSTC, to promote health and wellness.”

Provost Garcia echoes that sentiment.

“It serves two great causes: student scholarships, and a healthy lifestyle!” said Garcia.

The event will consist of several activities including a 5k competitive run, a 1-mile non-competitive walk, free t-shirts for those registered and door prizes. There will also be games for children beginning at 7:30 a.m.

The Walk/Run registration begins at 7 a.m., and will conclude at 9 a.m. The event will take place on the mall area of the TSTC Campus located at 1902 N. Loop 499.
