HARLINGEN — Day or night, rain or shine, run or walk, the Harlingen Hometown Heroes Trail at Pendleton Park is ready for traffic.
The official dedication of the new $416,000, one-mile trail yesterday at the park drew city officials, veterans and supporters of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.
“It’s an important way to provide the facilities and the opportunities for our community to get out and be healthy, to exercise, and to give them the resources that each and every one of our citizens needs to get out there and stay fit,” said Mayor Chris Boswell. “This is a great, great new addition to this park.”
Both Boswell and Parks Director Javier Mendez had praise for the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation, which partnered with the city, and funded $395,000 of the cost.
“The Harlingen Hometown Heroes Trail is a perfect example of one of these ideas that will promote healthy lifestyles,” said Randall Baker, chief executive of the Legacy Foundation, who said healthy lifestyles will be the way to counteract many of the major health concerns of the Valley, like diabetes and obesity.
“The bottom line in the mission and purpose of the Legacy Foundation is to improve the health of those who are living in the Rio Grande Valley,” Baker added.
Boswell noted the newest trail is part of the rapid expansion of hike and bike trails in the city, such as the Arroyo Colorado hike and bike trail, the newly-opened 25th Street trail and the city lake trail.
“We can’t thank the Legacy Foundation enough for being our partner in this,” Boswell added.
The new Hometown Heroes trail actually connects to an existing hike and bike trail inside Pendleton Park, making the entire length of the trail 1.5 miles.
