UPDATE: On Friday Harlingen police released the name of the shooting victim. He is identified as 23-year-old Jonathan Edward Sanchez of Harlingen.
A man shot and killed himself after the car he was riding in was involved in a minor accident in Harlingen.
Police say the incident happened at 2 p.m. when a 4-door sedan that was traveling west on Lincoln Avenue failed to stop at the intersection and struck a large AEP truck towing a trailer traveling south on First Street.
Witnesses tell police a passenger in the car got out of the vehicle, walked a short distance and then shot himself. The man was taken to Valley Baptist Medical Center where he was dead on arrival.
Police say no one was injured in the initial accident and they are trying to determine why the man killed himself.
