It isn’t everyday that you meet someone who works for a world-renowned company. However, TSTC alum Daniel Torres does just that.
Torres has had a successful long-term career working as a Computer Aided Drafting and Design Technician for Naismith Engineering, Inc., an environmental and surveying consulting firm, based in Corpus Christ.
“I have been able to grow tremendously with NEI (Naismith Engineering),” said Torres, 35, who started as an entry-level draftsman. “I have learned to be a leader and a responsible employer.”
The San Benito native currently works in the civil realm of the drafting field, and studied Drafting and Design at TSTC. He credits the college with helping him become the diligent employee that he is today.
“I had great mentors that helped me be confident and open minded about my future,” he said of his time spent in school. “TSTC opened doors from different areas for me, and I was able to choose what best fit my life.”
While many students have various positive experiences through their collegiate careers, Torres credits the bond between students and instructors with helping make his time in college even more special. It’s something that has stayed with him since he graduated in 2001.
“Knowing that I was never alone, and that there was always someone there to help me through any struggles I may have stumbled across, helped,” he said. “The faculty helped me make my career possible.”
When asked if he has any advice for students about to venture into the working world, Torres has a very simple answer.
“Keep your mind refreshed and soak in as much information as you can,” Torres explained.
“Everything you have learned and experienced will only make you better. Nobody can take that away from you. The real word in the workforce can be tough, but keep yourself open minded, humble and professional.”
Torres will be celebrating 15 years with Naismith Engineering, Inc. in October. Having already received numerous promotions in that time, Torres says he looks forward to another 15 with the company.
Harlingen Program Chair, David Campos, says Torres is one of many TSTC graduates that have found job fulfillment at Naismith Engineering.
“TSTC has a great partnership with Naismith. They have hired our students to work in their Corpus Christi and Brownsville facilities,” said Campos. “It’s so great to know our students, like Torres, are enjoying a successful career.”
