Valley teen found dead on Island

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Authorities yesterday recovered the body of a Mission teenager who went missing Thursday while swimming off South Padre Island.

Cameron County Parks Rangers reported they received a call at 11:09 a.m. yesterday about a body that washed ashore just north of county Beach Access No. 5, near the location where Mario Alberto Silva, 17, went missing Thursday.

Park Rangers and the South Padre Island Fire Department recovered the body about 200 yards north of where Silva disappeared in the surf.

Cameron County Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 Bennie Ochoa pronounced Silva dead. Ochoa ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Law enforcement officials said Silva went missing shortly after noon Thursday after using a boogie board near Beach Access No. 5.

The teenager did not know how to swim but took his boogie board farther into the water, said Silverio Cisneros, assistant chief with the Cameron County Parks Rangers. It’s believed the teen fell off of the boogie board and was unable to get back on. The teen was by himself in the water.
