South Padre Island — Clayton’s Beach Bar and Grill in South Padre Island has announced it will be expanding the business by constructing a new fishing pier.
The family-friendly popular beach venue received a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to do so last year.
Clayton Brashear, owner of Clayton’s Beach Bar and Grill, said he began the application process with the Army Corps more than two years ago. After visiting various piers around the United States, including California and Florida, Brashear decided to construct a pier of his own.
Brashear said he has “incorporated the best features to create a world-class tourist destination at Clayton’s.” He claims the pier will create a new surf break and help to renourish the beach in the area.
Clayton’s Pier will be located right next to Clayton’s Beach Bar and Grill, at 6800 Padre Blvd. Clayton’s Beach Bar and Grill general manager Adolfo Zamora said the pier will be 15 feet wide by 1,000 feet long. It will feature a 50-foot by 50-foot “T” head and have a concession area where guests can pay admission and buy fishing goods, such as bait.
Brashear said Clayton’s Pier also will include a restaurant and a bar on the water. The total area of the proposed pier, including the concession area and “T” head, will be 21,250 square feet.
Estimated to cost more than $3 million, Zamora said the pier project will bring more business to South Padre Island.
