A 20-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot in the shoulder when a man fired at him after meeting him for the sale of an English bulldog puppy, according to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

In a news release, authorities said deputies responded to the 10300 block of Mile 4 West Road in rural Weslaco for a call of deadly conduct, which was later reclassified to aggravated robbery.

The 20-year-old man who was shot said that he and his friend had met a man at the intersection of Mile 4 West Road and Mile 13 North Road to sell a puppy.

The man they met was driving a newer model blue Honda Accord while a second man who arrived drove a black Chrysler 300 sedan, according to the release.

The sheriff’s office said the man driving the Honda Accord asked to see the puppy while the driver of the Chrysler 300 got the puppy.

Then the driver of the Honda Accord took out a handgun and pointed at the two friends selling the puppy, according to the release.

They drove away, but the sheriff’s office said the suspects followed them and shot at them.

“The victim lost control of his vehicle, because he had been shot in the shoulder,” the release stated.

He was taken to DHR. His friend was not injured.

They drove away, but the sheriff’s office said the suspects followed them and shot at them.

Deputies searched the area for both vehicles but have not yet located them, according to the release.

Investigators are on scene.
