A third suspect, allegedly involved in the Mission shooting that took the life of a 6-year-old girl, has been taken into custody, Hidalgo County Sheriff J.E. “Eddie” Guerra announced via social media.
On Saturday morning, the sheriff’s special operations division was assisted by the United States Marshal Service’s fugitive task force in bringing in the third suspect, who was not identified.
Guerra said the third suspect is expected to be arraigned Sunday afternoon.
Previously, the sheriff’s office arrested 43-year-old Edinburg resident Daniel Guzman Flores and 42-year-old Alton resident Marco Antonio Chairez, who on Thursday were arraigned and charged with capital murder of a person under 10 years old.
The shooting in question occurred Tuesday afternoon in rural Mission. Investigators believe Flores and Chairez fired more than two dozen rounds into a residence, which resulted in one of the rounds hitting the young girl as she was lying in bed and watching television.
Despite going through two walls, Guerra stated the round killed the young girl instantly.
“I am pretty sure it’s going to be over two. I can pretty much say we are looking for at the minimum, two more people,” Guerra said of possible suspects aside from Flores and Chairez during a news conference Thursday.
The shooting continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s office Major Crimes Unit, the sheriff said.
