A second suspect in the fatal shooting of a 6-year-old girl was arrested Wednesday, Hidalgo County Sheriff J.E. “Eddie” Guerra announced via Twitter at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Guerra said the second suspect was taken into custody with the help of U.S. Marshals and Mission police officers.
“(The) 2 suspects will be arraigned tomorrow afternoon,” Guerra said in his tweet, possibly speaking about another man who was taken into custody as a person of interest the previous day.
The sheriff’s office initially said it was working with multiple local and federal law enforcement agencies to track down suspect vehicles connected to the fatal shooting between neighbors that led to the child’s death.
Deputies responded to a home south of 6 Mile Line near La Homa Road and Valencia Avenue in Mission at 5:07 p.m. Tuesday.
“Upon arrival, deputies found a 6-year-old female child inside her residence deceased. The victim suffered an apparent gunshot wound,” deputies said in a news release.
Guerra said Tuesday night that the girl was watching television when she was shot.
“Around four vehicles showed up and fired multiple rounds, we believe about 30 rounds, into the house. One of the rounds struck the female child as she was watching television. She died instantly,” Guerra said.
Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an ongoing neighbor dispute that escalated Tuesday.
Guerra said investigators had one person in custody, but were looking for three other vehicles. His office already had one vehicle connected to the fatal shooting in its possession, Guerra said, it would be searched once a warrant was obtained.
In a Wednesday afternoon update, the sheriff’s office said the description of the vehicles had already been shared with other area law enforcement agencies.
Spokesman Frank Medrano declined to provide the names of the victim or suspects in the case.
“We will not be identifying the victim beyond being a 6-year-old girl,” Medrano said. “Any and all suspects will be identified as the investigation progresses.”
The sheriff’s office is urging anyone with information to come forward and speak to investigators by calling (956) 383-8114.
