Hidalgo County sheriff confirms meteor fell west of McAllen

Hidalgo County Sheriff J.E. “Eddie” Guerra said Wednesday evening on Twitter that federal authorities confirmed Houston Air Traffic Control received reports from two aircraft that saw a meteorite west of McAllen.

“Where the exact point of impact is unknown,” he said. “No reports of any damage in that area has (sic) been received.”

The news broke late Wednesday afternoon after the Mission Police Department became inundated with calls reporting a loud explosion that shook houses, Chief Cesar Torres said.

However, Mission Mayor Norie Gonzalez Garza said via text that preliminary reports indicate that there was no explosion in Mission. She said that the sound was also heard west of Mission.

No other information is immediately available.
