Weslaco man accused of lighting Progreso couple’s vehicle on fire

Two men who allegedly lit a Progreso couple’s vehicle on fire suffered two fates: one was arrested on Thursday and the other was burned.

Fernando Herrera Rodriguez, 39, of Weslaco, was arrested last week and charged with arson.

In the early hours of Nov. 29, authorities were called out to subdue a vehicle fire at a Progreso home, according to the probable cause affidavit.

The couple who owned the vehicle, a 2014 GMC Acadia Denali, were woken up after a neighbor told the husband about the fire sometime before 5 a.m.

On Dec. 8, police met with the wife who said she was told the fire was started by two men, Fernando Herrera Rodriguez and Julio Treviño.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Herrera implicated himself during a Dec. 13 interview and said Treviño poured gasoline into the car through an open door and said he threw a lighted match.

The gasoline caught fire so quickly, it burned Treviño’s leg, Herrera said.

Herrera was arrested on Thursday and remains in custody under a $100,000 bond. He also had two previous warrants that resulted in an additional $5,000 bond.

Jail records do not indicate whether Julio Treviño was arrested.
