Down one during stoppage time, RGV FC Toros defender Isidro Martinez lined up for a corner kick, searching for the club’s third second-half goal. Martinez crossed a pass into the center of the box, with RGV FC defender Frank Nodarse outjumping the defense and heading the ball towards the middle of the net.

The shot was corralled by Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC’s goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell, as the Toros’ comeback attempt fell short, losing 3-2 on Thursday at Weidner Field in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The loss marks the second consecutive loss by the Toros, dropping to 3-6-0 this season. The Switchbacks improve to 8-1-0, taking control of first place in the USL Western Conference.

Trailing 3-0 after goals by Colorado Springs’ Elvis Amoh (43’) and Zachary Zandi (52’) and an own goal by RGV FC’s Luka Malesevic (64), the Toros cut into the deficit with 14 minutes remaining on a header off a corner kick from Martinez to Nodarse.

Three minutes later, Toros’ center back Wahab Ackwei made it a one goal game, scoring off a corner kick as well. Martinez was credited for assists on both scores.

The Toros’ tried to capitalize on the Nodarse-Martinez connection one more time during the waning moments of the contest, but were denied by the Switchbacks, ending their comeback hopes.

RGV FC returns to action at 9 p.m. Saturday, May 14, taking on Monterey Bay FC at Cardinale Stadium in Seaside, California.
