Ammo smuggler pleads guilty

A Tamaulipas man admitted Tuesday to attempting to smuggle more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition concealed in three grocery bags into Mexico with his co-defendant.

Juan Daniel Picazo-Jimenez pleaded guilty to knowingly attempting to export 1,240 rounds of .223 caliber ammo, court records indicate. Picazo-Jimenez’s co-defendant, Roberto Lopez-Salas, pleaded guilty to the same charge in late June.

According to a criminal complaint, on April 25, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working southbound inspections at the B&M International Bridge observed the men holding the grocery bags as they attempted to enter Mexico.

Authorities discovered 920 rounds concealed under clothing in two bags Lopez-Salas was holding and another 320 concealed under clothing in Picazo-Jimenez’s grocery bag.
