Execution date set for man from Brownsville

A Sept. 12 execution date has been set for a Brownsville man accused in the 1998 stabbing death of a mobile home park manager.

Ruben Gutierrez, 39, is scheduled to be executed on that date, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Institution.

Gutierrez was convicted in 1999 for murdering 85-year-old Escolastica Harrison at the Harrison Mobile Home Park on Morningside Road.

Gutierrez was 21 at the time of the crime.

Authorities said Gutierrez befriended Harrison so he could rob her of some $600,000 in cash that she had hidden in her trailer home. According to police statements, Harrison didn’t like banks and kept her money in suitcases at her home.

An autopsy revealed Harrison had been stabbed 13 times with two different screwdrivers and also was beaten. During Gutierrez’s 1999 trial, authorities said he masterminded her killing.
