Drainage, road improvements underway in Progreso

County and local officials broke ground this week along Gonzalez Road to kick off a drainage and road improvement project in Progreso.

Crews will reconstruct Gonzalez Road and enhance drainage in the area at a cost of $480,000, according to a Hidalgo County news release. Hidalgo County, with help from the Urban County program and the city of Progreso, will pay for the upgrades.

Precinct 1 Commissioner David Fuentes met with Progreso officials who identified the needed improvements to Gonzalez Road. They developed an interlocal agreement since the road runs through both county and city jurisdictions.

“Our drainage district will be in your community, improving over 15 miles, including Gonzalez Road,” Fuentes said at the groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday. “You will soon see all their equipment here, working hard to help alleviate drainage needs.”

The project could be completed as soon as June.
