Mercedes to give paid birthday day off to employees

Certain Mercedes employees will get a day off to celebrate another year of life as part of a new policy that began Wednesday.

The City Commission last week voted unanimously to adopt the birthday off with pay policy for all 112 full-time city employees.

“We certainly appreciate their consideration for the staff,” said interim City Manager Sergio Zavala of the commission.

Commissioner Ruben “Chano” Guajardo proposed that if an employee’s birthday falls from Tuesday through Thursday, the employee may elect to have the day off on either Monday or Friday.

Employees with birthdates that land on a weekend will either have a Friday or Monday off as part of a three-day weekend. Those with birthdays that fall on a city-observed holiday, like Independence Day, will take the workday off proceeding or succeeding the holiday.

“We’re trying to keep our staff happy, and this is one good thing that will benefit them,” Zavala said.
