Commuters across the Rio Grande Valley should exercise caution while heading out to work and school Wednesday morning as freezing weather could make crossing bridges and overpasses hazardous because of icy roadway conditions.
“Watch out for elevated surfaces because of light icing from freezing drizzle,” National Weather Service Brownsville/Rio Grande Valley Warning Coordination Meteorologist Barry Goldsmith said Monday afternoon. “The peak impact in the Valley is the Wednesday morning commute between 5 and 9 in the morning.”
A strong cold front bringing a blast of cold air from Canada will move through the Rio Grande Valley and the northern ranchlands today.
Freezing temperatures and rain could arrive in the ranchlands as early as noon today. The frigid weather is expected to reach Hidalgo and Cameron counties this evening through early Wednesday morning.
“This could be the coldest one of the season so far,” Goldsmith said.
By late this evening, temperatures in the Rio Grande Valley will be around 32 to 34 degrees with a possibility of temperatures as cold as 28 to 32 degrees.
“We expect everyone to get to 32 or lower at some point in this event,” Goldsmith said, adding that the “feels like” temperature will range from the upper teens to lower 20s from late Tuesday to around noon on Wednesday.
