EDINBURG — The Region One Education Service Center recently selected a student from the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District as one of the winners of its annual Holiday Art Contest.
Maritza Flores, a sophomore at Edinburg Economedes High School, won the top spot in the High School Division of the competition that included hundreds of entries. This year’s themes for the art contest were “A South Texas Holiday” or “A Border Holiday.”
“My inspiration for this was from my dad liking Mexican music and mariachi music,” Flores said. “Some of the details on my card are Mexican themed. For example, the elf is wearing pointy boots, since in some parts of Mexico they dance with pointy boots. The ‘posole’ is famous in Mexico and everybody loves it.”
Flores said that she learned about the contest from her art teacher, Marco Sanchez.
“I told some of my classes, ‘Let’s go and tackle this. It is a border Christmas,’” Sanchez said. “I think there’s a lot of culture here. There’s a lot of diversity. The fact that we’re getting Christmas and we’re getting our Tex-Mex heritage together makes for great artwork.”
According to Region One, the winning entries will become the artwork on the “official” Region One ESC holiday card sent out to regional and state educators. Winners will receive a set of holiday cards, with their art design, to share with friends and family in addition to a prize package of art supplies.
