A 31-year-old man was killed after being attacked with a board and then struck with a vehicle in Mission on Sunday, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
Deputies at around 8:52 p.m. found the body of Christian Castillo, 31, lying on Minnesota Road south of Mile 5 Road in Mission.
Witnesses told deputies that Castillo had been followed by a Chevrolet HHR occupied “by at least two men,” with one of them exiting the Chevy and striking the victim “multiple times with a wooden board, causing him to fall to the ground.”
Castillo was then struck by another vehicle, this one a blue Chevrolet Silverado traveling southbound and didn’t stop. Deputies, however, say this was unrelated to the earlier assault.
The Texas Department of Public Safety assisted with the investigation by conducting a crash reconstruction. Sheriff’s investigators and crime scene specialists also responded and interviewed witnesses and gathered evidence, helping identify the suspect, whose vehicle — the HHR — was registered to Castillo’s wife.
His wife “had previously filed an assault report against Castillo that evening,” the sheriff’s office said.
The vehicle in question was located near Minnesota Road and Mile 5 Road, “where they found a wooden board with apparent blood stains inside.”
Juan Miguel Ibarra Armenta, 35, the boyfriend of the victim’s wife, admitted to being at the scene along with Jose Maximiliano Flores, 32, who deputies say struck Castillo with the board.
Ibarra Armenta was arrested for manslaughter and more arrests are expected.
Witnesses are asked to come forward with information by calling the sheriff’s office at (956) 383-8114, or to remain anonymous call the Hidalgo County Crime Stoppers Hotline at (956) 668-TIPS (8477) or submit an anonymous tip through the P3 TIPS app.
