In the late 1900s, when I was a young person, a store-bought costume was a plastic tarp we stuck our arms in, and the matching facemask with a rubber band you hoped wouldn’t snap apart during Trick-or-Treating.

Bob-Shrinker, of “Beetlejuice” fame and the smiling kitty Catnap of “Playtime for Poppy,” are leading this year’s national Google searches for adult costume ideas, according to its Frightgeist list.
Also topping the list is Australian breakdancer Raygun, real name Rachel Gunn: A green tracksuit, green hat and white kicks are all you need to nail this Olympic look.
On their children’s list are Red from “Descendants,” Dr. Doom and Kidpool.
