The Edinburg man who crashed into a canal on Saturday morning has died.

Police identified him as 32-year-old Carlos Talamantes III.

“The investigation remains ongoing, with preliminary findings suggesting alcohol may have been a contributing factor,” the city said in a Monday news release.

The crash happened at around 2 a.m. in the 2300 block of West Sprague Street.

Responding officers found a “vehicle overturned in a canal,” and they immediately jumped in and were able to rescue a woman in the vehicle, according to a Saturday news release.

She suffered minor injuries and is expected to recover.

Police went back into the canal and pulled Talamantes out, who was unresponsive, and began CPS.

“This serves as another reminder from the Edinburg Police Department: Make a plan. Get a designated driver or use a ride-share option. Don’t drink and drive,” police said in the release.
