A former correctional officer at the Evins Regional Juvenile Center has been arrested for taking cash to bring in contraband to minor offenders.

The Texas Juvenile Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General said in a news release that 34-year-old McAllen resident Jacquevias James Watkins was arrested Tuesday on a charge of bribery.

The arrest stemmed from an investigation into separate incidents that happened in June.

“Watkins, while working as a Juvenile Correctional Officer at the Evins Regional Juvenile Center, concealed an electronic cigarette and provided it to a committed juvenile offender in TJJD custody,” the release stated. “Investigators determined Watkins received cash transactions to introduce and provide the juvenile offender with the contraband.”

Watkins bailed out of the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on Wednesday on a $30,000 bond.
