San Juan City Manager Ben Arjona has been placed on unpaid leave for one week, Mayor Mario Garza said Wednesday.

During Tuesday’s meeting, commissioners met in executive session to discuss an item on the agenda regarding “the Appointment, Employment, Evaluation, Reassignment, Duties, Discipline, or Dismissal of a Public Officer or Employee, Specifically the City Manager.”

Garza said that he is unable to comment on Arjona’s leave, but did describe it as a personnel matter. He referred questions to the city attorney, who has yet to respond to calls requesting comment.

Arjona has served as city manager for the city of San Juan since September 2015. Commissioners voted 4-0 to give Arjona the job on Sept. 8, 2015, after the city manager post had been left vacant since April 2014.

He had previously served as a management analyst for the city of Hidalgo.

Fire Chief Tirso Garza will serve as interim city manager during Arjona’s leave of absence.
