The city of Brownsville is in line for more than $9 million in federal funding to pay for upgrades to the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport.

The office of U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-Brownsville, announced the news on Monday. The money is being provided through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Airport Improvement Plan, and will support the second phase of reconstruction of Runway 18/36 at the airport.

The project is necessary to ensure the runway meets modern safety standards and is able to accommodate future growth at the airport, improving both efficiency and safety for passenger and cargo flights, according to the announcement.

“This $9 million investment is a significant boost for Brownsville and all of South Texas,” Gonzalez said. “The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law continues to deliver for South Texas, ensuring that our airports are equipped to handle rising demand without sacrificing safety and reliability. I am committed to making the Rio Grande Valley a vital hub for Texas through the modernization and efficiency of all our ports of entry.”

Airports around the nation are benefiting from the infrastructure law’s funding for modernization and improvement of critical infrastructure. Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport is one of many airports nationwide benefiting from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s investment in modernizing and improving critical infrastructure.

President Joe Biden signed the legislation into law in November 2021.

“With this project, the airport will be in a better position to serve our region’s growing economy and population,” Gonzalez said.
