Donna High School’s head football coach has resigned following his arrest Sunday.

District Public Relations Officer Sandra Quintanilla confirmed Monday that the administration was notified of Mike Gonzales’ arrest in a statement.

Gonzales tendered his resignation which was promptly accepted, the statement said.

“On Sunday, September 15, 2024, Donna ISD administration was notified of the arrest of Donna High School Coach Mike Gonzales. District policy prohibits us from releasing specific details regarding the individual involved,” the statement read. “However, we can confirm that Mr. Gonzales tendered his resignation and it was promptly accepted. As this is an employment matter, no further comment will be made regarding Mr. Gonzales’ employment.”

Booking records indicate he is charged with assault of a family member.

A probable cause affidavit for his arrest said police patrolling a business plaza at 1901 West Interstate Highway 2 at approximately 2:43 a.m. heard a woman and man arguing in the parking lot.

“The woman was yelling, ‘give me my phone,'” the affidavit stated.

That document said how an officer noted that Gonzales “was highly intoxicated.”

The woman told police she and Gonzales had been dating for seven years and they began arguing after she “found some questionable messages” on his cellphone, according to the affidavit.

Police said she walked out of the bar with his phone and he followed, which is “where he pushed and shoved her for his cell phone.”

Then he took her phone after they drove off, police say.

The affidavit said she begged him for her cellphone and that he instead hit her with an open hand on her face and pushed her head into the vehicle’s passenger window.

That document said Gonzales hit her again on the neck “and strangled her a series of times.”

The responding officer, however, noted that he did not see any bruises or handprints on the woman’s neck or body, according to the affidavit.

Gonzales bailed out of the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on Monday on a $2,500 bond, records show.

He was arrested by the Weslaco Police Department.
