The Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization is setting aside more than $6 million for two “critical projects” within Hidalgo County’s Precinct 3, specifically for residents living near Liberty Boulevard in Peñitas, and Los Ebanos Road in Mission.

According to a county news release Thursday, the MPO is allocating $2,440,000 for the Liberty Boulevard project and $4 million for the Los Ebanos Road project.

The county said in the release that these funds will address “major issues facing Precinct 3’s growing population.” Among those issues is accommodating infrastructure growth on public roadways.

A funding shortfall had previously prevented the Liberty Boulevard project from moving forward in Peñitas. Precinct 3 Commissioner Everado “Ever” Villarreal has prioritized more money “to augment the substantial investments the (county) has made in road and drainage improvements.”

“This funding will strengthen Precinct 3 and allow us to fulfill the growing needs of our constituents, and provide untapped opportunities of success,” the release read. “This latest round demonstrates that the investment and value of our constituents are the top priority of Commissioner Villarreal’s prosperity plan for Precinct 3.”

The county went on to identify the projects as a means to benefit Precinct 3 by helping expand and develop the cities of Peñitas and Mission.

“It’s a blueprint for the future of Precinct 3, by creating a framework for decision-making in important areas such as land use, economic growth, sustainability, community identity, housing and transportation,” the county stated in the release. “Commissioner Villarreal is committed to Precinct 3, by improving the area where we live, work and raise our children.”
