The Texas Department of Public Safety is currently investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that left a Mercedes resident dead Friday evening.

At around 9:59 p.m., a maroon 2008 Ford Mustang traveling southbound on Farm-to-Market Road 491 approached U.S. Highway 281 and crashed into a green 2013 Kenworth semi-truck that was towing a silver tanker, DPS said in a news release Saturday, adding that the driver of the Mustang ran a stop sign.

“(The Mustang) drove under the tanker’s undercarriage, and dragged several feet before stopping on the right side of the bar ditch,” DPS said in the release.

The driver of the Mustang, 61-year-old Benigno Montiel of Mercedes, died at the scene due to his injuries.
