The Texas Department of Public Safety said a combination of unsafe speeds and wet roads on Sunday afternoon resulted in a fatal one-vehicle crash that killed a 57-year-old woman.

In a news release, DPS said the crash happened at approximately 5:33 p.m. on FM 493 and Mile 13 Road in Donna.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a white 2014 Ford F-150 driven by a man and occupied by Esmeralda Garza was traveling southbound on FM 493, approaching Mile 13 Road at an unsafe speed on a wet road due to rain when the driver lost control and hit a tree on the east side of the roadway.

The unidentified driver was transported to Doctors Hospital at Renaissance with non-life threatening injuries while Garza, who was airlifted to the same hospital, died from her injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
