The Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District announced last week that its classrooms will be equipped with ‘Stop the Bleed’ kits, a move the district says will expand access to potentially life-saving equipment.
According to a release, the district is already in compliance with state legislation from 2020 that requires bleeding control kits in schools and training for them.
A resolution approved by the district’s board, the release says, will provide one of those kits to its over 2,500 classrooms and train all students and staff through a partnership with Texas A&M University.
“We want our families to have peace of mind in knowing that at PSJA ISD we are going above state requirements to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff,” Interim Superintendent Alejandro Elias said. “These kits along with other school safety measures show that we’re here for our students and our staff in an emergency.”
The kits will include tourniquets, compression bandages, gauze, trauma shears and gloves.
“This is part of our efforts to prepare. We hope we never need these kits, but we want to make sure everyone knows where they are at and that they are accessible,” the release quoted School Board President Dr. Cynthia Gutierrez saying during the May 8 board meeting.
