Larry Charles Culbert III

A 30-year-old San Juan man who fatally cut a 47-year-old woman’s throat while her 11-year-old child was present in the Bealls plaza in Alamo has been sentenced to 43 years in prison.

Larry Charles Culbert III pleaded guilty to murder on Thursday, court records indicate.

Culbert killed Andrea Socorro Reyna on March 25, 2021, in the parking lot of Bealls at 1449 Duranta Ave. after a verbal dispute at around 6:30 p.m.

At the time, Alamo police said they believed Culbert killed Reyna after they finished shopping.

“They got out of their vehicles and a verbal dispute began regarding jealousy. The suspect then knocked the victim to the ground and with a knife cut the victim’s throat and the suspect then turned the knife on himself, causing a self-inflicted stab wound to his neck area,” a news release stated.

Child Protective Services took custody of the child and reunited them with a family member.

The Monitor requested a copy of the probable cause affidavit but civil attorney’s with the Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office asked for a Texas Attorney General’s opinion on whether the sheriff’s office could withhold that document based on Texas Family Code rules about minors.

The Texas Attorney General sided with the civil attorneys and the newspaper was unable to obtain the affidavit to learn more about the allegations.

Culbert will receive credit for more than two years he spent in the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center awaiting the resolution of his case.
