ORIGINAL STORY:

The Mission Police Department is inviting the community for its 9th annual Garden of Light Thursday to support local families impacted by crime in honor of National Crime Victims’ Right Week.

The event will kick off at 6 p.m. Thursday at Bannworth Park, located at 1822 N. Shary Rd. The first 100 attendees will receive a free shirt, the release stated.

Observed nationwide, National Crime Victims’ Right Week is dedicated to learning about victimizations and its effect on people, families, friends and the community. Additionally, the week also promotes laws, policies and programs to aid victims of crime.

For this year’s event, the police department will be joined by over 30 families from across the Rio Grande Valley, with 11 from Mission. More than 20 agencies will also participate in the event by providing the community with resources, information and education.

The event will begin with a walk, followed by a ceremony, then finish at the Memorial Garden; families will plant a tree in memory of their loved one.

“The names of those no longer with us will forever be remembered in the City of Mission,” the release stated.
