The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a one-vehicle crash that happened early Sunday morning that left a 21-year-old Roma woman dead.

In a news release, DPS said the crash happened at 5:44 a.m. on Seminary Road north of FM 1925 in Edinburg.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Aleena Karissa Belmontes, who was driving a blue Jeep Wrangler and not wearing a seatbelt, was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to maintain a single lane.

She drove off the roadway, overcorrected to the right before veering to the northbound lane and overcorrecting to the right, according to DPS.

“The Jeep overcorrected to the right, went on a left skid, struck a tree on the east side of the roadway, and rolled over to its passenger side,” the release stated.

Belmontes died at the scene.
