An investigation is underway after Edinburg police opened fire in the vicinity of Owassa and the U.S. Expressway 281 frontage Friday.

Edinburg city officials announced in a statement Friday that police are investigating “an officer involved shooting” at that location and that a suspect “suffered non-life-threatening injuries.”

Officials say the traffic is currently rerouted west as there will be no northbound traffic allowed on Frontage from Owassa.

Later Friday, spokesperson Roxanne Lerma said police officers were dispatched to 5212 S. Expressway 281 in response to a report of a man spitting at another person.

When police arrived, they found a 41-year-old Robstown man with a knife who “appeared to be agitated and irate.” His name has not been released.

“Officers gave commands for the subject to drop the knife in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. The suspect then raised the knife in an aggressive manner, and one officer discharged their weapon, striking the subject in the upper leg,” Lerma said in a news release.

The Robstown man was treated at the scene and transported to a hospital. The knife was also recovered at the scene, according to Lerma.

Texas Rangers are now investigating as the Edinburg Police Department’s internal affairs division investigates the case from an administrative position.
