Edinburg police arrest off-duty sheriff’s deputy for DWI, weapons violation

Hidalgo County Sheriff J.E. “Eddie” Guerra said an off-duty deputy has resigned after being arrested on Friday for driving while intoxicated and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

In a statement posted to Facebook, Guerra said he learned that former deputy Victor Fortanelli was arrested Friday by Edinburg police and said that Fortanelli has submitted his resignation, which is effective immediately.

“My commitment to preserving the public’s confidence and trust in the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office continues to be the highest priority,” Guerra said. “We will continue to investigate any and all allegations of employee misconduct, and I will take the necessary and appropriate actions to maintain accountability and transparency to you, the citizens we serve.”
