The Edinburg Airport will be closed until 9 p.m. following a vehicle and grass fire, the city said Friday.

At about 4 p.m., a truck crossed a patch of grass which, combined with the dry air conditions, ignited a fire that was also caught by the truck.

“That blaze then led to a grass fire on the south of the airport,” the city stated in a news release.

The Edinburg Fire Department estimates that about 38 acres went up in flames. However, no injuries have been reported and there was no damage to property that didn’t belong to the city.

While the fire is now under control, the city said the airport will be shut down until 9 p.m. as per safety procedures.

Fire departments from the cities of Pharr, McAllen, Linn-San Manuel, San Juan, Elsa, Edcouch, and Mission responded to the fire.

The Texas Division of Emergency Management and Hidalgo County Emergency Management were also on site providing resources.
