Residents living in the Southmost area of Brownsville are invited to attend a community meeting Saturday to discuss what they would like to see in their area.

The community meeting will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at Tony Gonzalez Park at 34 Tony Gonzalez Dr.

It is hosted by the International Southmost Choice Neighborhood.

Nurith Galonsky, District 1 Commissioner, said this will be the fourth community meeting International Southmost Choice Neighborhood will have and wants to get many residents to attend.

“We want community input,” Galonsky said. “It’s more likely that we will do something that they want if they actually tell us what they want instead of us just imposing our ideas on them.”

The meetings stem from a grant the City of Brownsville received from U.S. Housing and Urban Development in 2021.

“We have to deliver and update (on the plans) by the end of the year of the completed plan,” Galonsky said.

Part of the requirements of the grant is to hold community meetings to see what the residents would like.

Once all the community meetings have been held and officials have gathered all the information, they will develop a plan with different projects and come up with a timeline for them, she said.

“Hopefully we will chip away over the next few years on some of these projects,” Galonsky said.

A raffle, games for children and food will be available at Saturday’s event.
