Mission to open warming shelter for expected freezing temperatures

In anticipation of freezing temperatures befalling the Rio Grande Valley later this week, the city of Mission announced it will be opening a warming shelter.

The center, located at the Mission Parks & Recreation building, will open Thursday evening for anyone in need of a safe and warm shelter, the city announced Monday.

Located at 721 N. Bryan Road, the center will be open from 6 p.m. Thursday to 8 a.m. Friday.

It will open again from 6 p.m. on Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday.

Those seeking shelter at the warming center are asked to pack a blanket, pillow, medication, personal identification, toiletry items and snacks.

The city is also recommending masks for patrons, and the shelter will also have expanded space to allow for physical distancing.

Temperatures throughout the Valley are expected to dip below freezing beginning Thursday evening, according to the National Weather Service.

There is currently at least a 60% chance that temperatures will fall to or below 28 degrees across much of deep South Texas Friday night into Saturday morning.

Additionally, there is at least a 50% chance that temperatures will fall to or below 32 degrees across much of deep South Texas on Saturday night and into Sunday morning.
