The Brownsville Independent School District Board of Trustees has approved renewal of BISD’s District of Innovation Plan for an additional five years, clearing the way for an earlier start date for the 2023-2024 school year.

The board approved the plan on Monday, meaning BISD can adopt an instructional calendar to begin the 2023-2024 school year prior to the fourth Monday of August, so that the calendar continues to meet district and community needs.

An administration fact sheet states that the benefits include:

>> Instructional days are more balanced between first and second semesters;

>> Students complete the fall semester of instruction and exams prior to the Christmas holidays;

>> Classroom teachers have the opportunity to deliver more equitable learning experiences for students in the fall and spring semesters;

> Students and teachers have more instructional days prior to mandatory state testing in December and/or Spring Assessments;

>> The district can better align dual credit courses with post-secondary institutions such as the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley and Texas Southmost College;

>> Increased flexibility in governing the education programming for students;

>> Greater local control of the instructional calendar; and

>> Empowerment to innovate and think differently about start dates and schedules.
