Brownsville police have charged a 47-year-old woman with installing a tracking device on the vehicle of her romantic rival.

In a news release, authorities said Maribel Ramirez-Cortez turned herself in at the Brownsville Police Department on a charge of unlawful installation of a tracking device.

The incident that led to her arrest happened on June 25, when a woman took her vehicle to get tire maintenance.

“The worker advised the victim of a round object with a green light on the inside wheel well,” the release stated.

The woman called police and reported the device, according to the release, which said officers recovered the object and advised the woman to make contact with detectives.

“The victim did tell the officers that she believed Ramirez-Cortez could have placed it on her vehicle,” the release stated. “Ramirez-Cortez and the victim have the same boyfriend and have been arguing for some time.”

On Sept. 30, the woman again went to the Brownsville Police Department to tell detectives that Ramirez-Cortez told a mutual friend that the charges needed to be dropped, according to the release, which said that friend was supposed to talk to the woman to get the charges dropped.

“Ramirez-Cortez also called the victim and asked her to drop the charges,” the release stated.

Detectives obtained a warrant for Ramirez-Cortez’s arrest and she surrendered on Friday.

She received a $5,000 bond on the charge, according to police.
