Monte Alto homeowner faces drug charge after shooting man with knife

MONTE ALTO — A Monte Alto homeowner accused of shooting a man displaying a knife earlier this week was not charged in connection with the death; instead, he was charged with possession of a controlled substance.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office identified the alleged shooter on Thursday as 33-year-old Jose Lara. He is accused of killing 29-year-old Rodrigo Arjona on Wednesday. Details about the events leading up to the shooting have not been released nor has any information about whether the men knew each other.

Investigators only said Arjona was displaying a knife at a home in the 8200 block of Trimble Avenue, according to information previously released by the sheriff’s office.

Lara, who called police to report the shooting, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace Jason Peña set his bond at $50,000.
