Mission man accused of stealing checks worth $374K from construction company

Eliseo Robles

Mission police last week arrested a 37-year-old man accused of stealing three checks from a commercial construction company worth approximately $374,000.

Police have charged Mission resident Eliseo Robles Jr. with three counts of forgery of a financial instrument.

The investigation into Robles began on Jan. 27 when Mission-based 5Star GC Construction reported a theft of mail where two checks had been taken from the company’s mailbox on Jan. 17, according to an affidavit.

Those checks were for $25,005.75 and $255,692.92.

When the company made contact with the vendor, it learned that the $25,000 had been cashed but since the larger check had not, the company managed to cancel the check.

Investigators learned the $25,000 had been deposited into an account associated with Robles and when the investigator called him on the phone, he denied knowing anything about the unauthorized transactions, according to the affidavit.

Although the $255,000 check had been canceled, investigators said in the affidavit that Robles had endorsed it and deposited into his account on Feb. 10.

A few months later, on May 10, the company again reported another stolen check, this time for $93,641.66.

However, the theft of this check occurred in late 2021 and the company only learned of it after calling a company it contracted with in reference to a payment for a project.

The company informed 5Star GC Construction that it had already sent the check and that it had been cashed.

Investigators allege Robles endorsed and deposited that check into his account on Dec. 10.

Authorities booked Robles into the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center last Thursday and he bailed out on a total of $225,000 in bonds on Friday, jail records indicate.
