Suspect vehicle stopped with spike strips just before deadly shootout with police in Falfurrias

The Falfurrias Police Department said Sunday that an unidentified person killed in a shootout Saturday afternoon opened fire after officers stopped their vehicle with a spike strip.

The incident happened at about 8:21 p.m. that day at U.S. Highway 281 and Terry Street following a vehicle pursuit, which started after the driver fled from a traffic stop.

“As officers engaged the suspect in the vehicle, the suspect began shooting at the officers, striking a Texas DPS Trooper,” Falfurrias police said on Facebook. “Officers returned fire and the suspect was killed during the shooting.”

The trooper is in stable condition and no other officers were injured.

Falfurrias police said one of the agency’s officers was involved in the shooting.

The Texas Department of Public Safety has not released the identity of the individual who was shot and killed.

When asked whether DPS would release the identity of the trooper and the deceased suspect, a spokesperson for the agency on Monday morning only said details will be released as they become available and that the investigation is ongoing.

The Texas Rangers are the lead investigative agency.

“We ask that you keep all those involved and their families in your prayers and our thoughts are with the Trooper who was shot,” Falfurrias police said. “We thank all agencies for their support and response to the incident, and thank the Officers for their bravery during the events that transpired.”

Like DPS, Falfurrias police said the agency would update the public as the investigation continues.
