Former evidence tech charged with stealing $28K, tampering with Hidalgo County Sheriff’s records

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office on Monday arrested a now former evidence technician for allegedly stealing more than $28,000 and tampering with records, according to a news release from the agency.

Miguel David Soliz, 36, was charged with a dozen counts of tampering with a governmental record and a single count of theft by a public servant.

The sheriff’s office said Soliz worked in the evidence division.

“Soliz’s employment with the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office has been terminated effective immediately,” the release said.

In a separate statement, Sheriff J.E. “Eddie” Guerra said he learned about the investigation Friday.

“I am committed to preserving the public’s confidence and trust at the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office,” Guerra said. “We will continue to investigate any and all allegations of employee misconduct and I will take the necessary and appropriate actions to maintain accountability and transparency to you, the citizens we serve.”

The news release said Soliz received a total of $75,000 in bonds for the 13 charges.
